Great Lakes Insurance began back in 1998 as a captive agency representing American National Insurance in Cloquet. Eight years later we made the decision to become an independent insurance agency, representing more than just one company. Being independent provides us and our policyholders much more choice when it came to choosing the best coverage and finding the best value.

Don Lathrop Jr. is by far the very best insurance agent I have every had for my personal and business needs over the last 47 years and 6 ins. agents. He will answer his phone most every time I call him, and if he missed my call, he will call back as soon as he gets the VM or text. He is so willing to find the best fit for all my insurances needs, both price and for what my personal and business needs require. He and his entire staff are amazing, and It is very apparent why his agency is growing so fast. They all give you outstanding service.

Extremely friendly and helpful! Zach is very professional, efficient and helps with any questions and/or concerns at any time! Most insurance agencies are hard to get a hold of but Zach is always right on top of it! My husband use to work for them years ago and the owners are amazing! Friendly and welcoming of us "new comers". Not only is the staff awesome but the prices are hard to beat. We have continued to be clients because of the prices! I highly recommend this company to everyone!

Great Lakes Insurance has been great! Zach Walters is my agent. He walked me threw my first time having insurance and when I bought a new car he responded and had me a new policy within 24 hours! Makes sure I get the best for the cheapest. Wonderful service I will not insure threw anyone else.

When I first signed up it was great every year after my rates increased although we have never had 1 thing against us. As well as the customer service it was extremely difficult to get in contact with our agent we would have to contact someone different every time. Then when I switched companies and cancelled everything it was not cancelled for months I've had to follow up and spend hours trying to figure it out. I've now received a collection notice on unpaid premiums even though my policies were cancelled well supposed to be. They have been so unprofessional about this all. Thank goodness I have a new agent to clean up their mess. WILL NEVER RECOMMEND. my whole family has left this company in past 2 years.

We have had auto, homeowner, ATV, motorhome and rental insurance with Great Lakes for over 25 years. In recent years, CSR Denise has assisted us with all our questions and pricing. She is a GEM, always professional and willing to help. I highly recommend Great Lakes, can’t find GREAT customer service like she provides!

Update: Don’s response to my review is a far cry from how he spoke to me. He was exceptionally rude, used derogatory language, and was very unprofessional. The bottom line is he dropped the ball. I put my trust and business in a company who didn’t deserve it, and his mistake cost me thousands of dollars. .... TERRIBLE customer service. I have been a customer for years and when I had a claim, was treated poorly and left with thousands of dollars out of pocket due to an unpaid claim because my insurance was “cancelled” without my knowledge, NINE months early! Completely unprofessional. Canceled multiple personal and business accounts and took business elsewhere.

I actually wanted to see how good my rates were and I asked a few others to quote me apples to apples. None of them could touch my price. Not to mention they are always quick to respond to anything I need. So great customer service and great rates!!! Highly recommended.

Very poor customer service 3 times I have been in with a problem on a bill, was told they would get back to me shortly, never heard an word. I should say that the problem started after I switched to a different company, maybe they take better care of their customers than former customers, but the problem was still with their company.
